Newsprint Wrapping Paper – How Many Sheets Per Ream

One of the most common questions we get asked as a packaging company is about newsprint wrapping paper. The question is how many sheets in a 10kg bundle?

Well OnlinePackagingShop.co.uk can answer that question for you now.

A quire is an archaic printer’s measure and there were 20 quires to the ream (a ream, in those days, being 480 sheets, so 24 sheets. A ream is now generally considered to be approximately 500 sheets).

Newsprint paper varies in weight between 40 and 57 grams per square metre so we have to do the primary school maths to work out how many sheets are there in a ream of newsprint paper:

A 20 x 30 inch sheet is 600 square inches which is 0.387096 square metres.

Using an average paper weight of 50gsm, therefore, a single 20 x 30 sheet weighs 50 x 0.387096 = 19.36 grams.

A 10 kilo bundle of newsprint offcuts is 10,000 grams which, at 19.36 grams per sheet would be 10000 divided by 19.36.

This would give you 516 sheets!

Because of the variable weight of the newsprint paper, we would say there are approximately 500 sheets plus or minus 10 per cent but without guarantee as they are sold by weight and not by quantity.
