Protective Foam Packaging Materials

Foam packaging materials are made from various forms of polystyrene or polyethylene materials.  These are often obtained as byproducts of petroleum industry. The choice of the packing material will depend on the particular use. They can either be used to strengthen the edges of a packaging or to cushion in between fragile materials or to protect its surface from the weathering agents. The choice of the foam packaging materials is therefore dependent on what elements of the cargo or goods needs to be protected.

Surface protection: this basically requires a foam packaging that can be purchased in sheets or rolls. One of the most popular protective foams available from your packaging supplier is Cellaire Foam. These can be made from polyethylene because this material is resistant to any scratches. If goods are being transported across long distances, then it is important that they are secured on the surface. The handling of cargo even among the best cargo handling companies cannot guarantee the lack of scratches. Products such as refrigerators would need such protection because they may not be secured completely with a heavy layer of protection. In addition to choosing a material that would not be easily scratched, it is important to remember that the charges or shipping fees would depend on the weight of the cargo.  The use of foam packaging does not add much weight to the weight of the cargo and therefore does not lead to rise in costs.

Filling in the space: This is best done by the use of biodegradable loose fill foam packing peanuts or Styrofoam. These are light duty foam that may not in themselves protect the cargo. They need to be used in conjunction with other materials. They can be made in various shapes and foams that would fit the gaps in the cargo. This provides cushioning for the goods such that they would not knock against each other. Because of their light weight, the eventual cargo is not significantly different thus maintaining the cost of shipping.

Accustomed foam: with the advancement in technology, it is now possible to find foam that is malleable and therefore allows for customized fitting. This is a type of foam that can be made to stick to the outside of the cargo and shaped according to the shape of the product. This is necessary to ensure that the foam used is just adequate for the section required. This also saves the money that would have been spent unnecessarily.

Whatever the shipping needs are, foam packaging provides the necessary products. They are able to give you a peace of mind even as your cargo travels long distance. If you are not sure of which foam materials to use, then you can consider consulting your shipping agent.
