Packaging your belongings for moving or storage may seem easy as pie; however, there can be more to it all than meets the eye. To ensure your goods arrive the way you want them to and to minimise any damage there are a few things you can do. To help you read on to discover the top tips from the professionals when packing your corrugated cardboard boxes.

What is the best type of box to use?
The best advice we can give is to use boxes made from corrugated cardboard only as many of the other types of box on the market are just not suitable or fit for purpose. With corrugated cardboard you have a good choice available in different strengths from single wall, double wall and triple wall, all of which should be available from your local packaging supplier.

Pay particular attention to those fragile items. For this we advise using double wall boxes or triple wall boxes. Where possible try and use a box that is roughly the same size as the object you wish to pack, if you find you have gaps then you must fill these with suitable void filler such as bubble wrap, Loosefil chips or newspaper off cuts. Try to avoid using boxes that have already been used before for your fragile items as they will have lost some amount of strength and will not be as durable as a brand new box.

How should i pack my goods/items?
There are a number of good tips you can use when packing your fragile items into a corrugated box before you ship. Use the ideas below as a general guideline:

  1. Start to construct your box by sealing the bottom with a strong packing tape.
  2. Wrap your item in bubble wrap or other cushioning materials and place in the centre of the box.
  3. Eliminate the gaps! Fill all remaining gaps in the box with loose fill/void fill and make sure that it is packed tight with no room for movement.
  4. Cover any sharp edges with cardboard or foam edge protectors.
  5. Remember to label your box with appropriate warning stickers, such as ‘fragile’ or ‘handle with care’.

By following these small rules you’re ruling out more chances that your item will be damaged in the shipping or storage process.
